![]() Financial Information Mission Life Haven is a temporary shelter that provides a safe and nurturing environment for homeless pregnant women and women with young children. We are committed to assisting them in developing skills that will enable them to live independently. Programs Almost 90 percent of the families served move on to permanent independent housing. Others require additional intensive services before they can live independently. Life Haven helps these families seek out those supportive services; medical and mental healthcare, substance abuse treatment, etc. Staff are on duty 24-hours a day and are ready to help shelter residents with any issue. We offer on-site workshops each weekday. For the women, programs are scheduled weekly which include literacy training, vocational counseling, parenting support, life skills (nutrition and budgeting) and housing search assistance. During workshop sessions, children at the shelter are provided a psycho-educational program in our warm, friendly and educational childcare center. Life Haven has collaborative arrangements to provide medical and mental health care on-site. Community Kitchen provides on-site vocational training in culinary skills with follow-up services. Housing services include assistance with permanent housing applications for every shelter resident that qualifies for a security deposit. At least one "How to be a good tenant" workshop is provided to each resident during their 60-day stay at the shelter in the Housing Assistance Workshop series. Life Haven's goal is to address the issues that led to homelessness, hoping to end it one family at a time through careful case management. Our case manager and 24-hour staffing support each family's goals, and shelter residents are encouraged to take an active role in their own case management. Additional Comments from the OrganizationA client?s story: Sarah moved to CT to start a new life with the 7-year-old daughter and 9 month-old son. The moved in with Sarah?s sister and the first argument brought this family to the welfare office looking for shelter. Sarah?s sister has kept the little money that Sarah brought with the m from Florida. Life Haven has provided Sarah and her children with many donations and coordinated services to help them. Sarah told us "I must find a place to stay, a babysitter, and get and job . . Life Haven has computers, and assistance in writing a resume. Life Haven provides parenting workshops to keep you on point with your children. I'm getting to know how to get around on the bus. I have a list for daycare and everyday there is a new list for housing." We worked with Sarah for four months in our aftercare program until she reunited with her mother out-of-state. Note: The balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot long survive, but the types of assets and liabilities also must be considered. For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables, securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities (payables, deferred revenue, current year loan and note payments). Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.
89% of funds go to programs, 9% to general and administrative support and 2% on fund-raising costs. Basic Information
