Life Haven is the only shelter in the state with licensed, on-site child care. Life Haven's Childcare Center provides a safe, consistent and stimulating environment for the children while their mothers work to build healthy lives for their families. Currently, the center is equipped to serve 17 homeless children. The head teacher for the center holds a CDA in elementary education. Two foster grandparents and numerous volunteers also support the center to maintain a 5:1 ratio of children to caregivers. The daily activity schedule includes free play, music and movement, art, story time, snack time, outdoor play as weather permits, and a rest period.
Our childcare program is specifically designed to meet the needs of homeless children. Each child is assessed and their care plan may include anger management, self-esteem, and health and safety education. The program gratefully receives much of its funding from New Haven Public Schools for our School Readiness Program.
