Donation Hours: Tuesdays 2 pm to 6 pm

Fridays & Saturdays 8 am to Noon
Call to coordinate any donation of furniture: We move furniture directly into families’ new homes. All items must be in new or gently used condition. All items should be washed and ready to use.

Our Special Requests & ‘Rules’

Things that do not comply with this list must be trucked away at an additional cost to the shelter. This defeats the purpose of your donation.

We cannot accept mattresses, box springs or appliances.

          Would you like to volunteer?

We are always grateful for volunteers - both individuals and groups - who support our work. Here are some suggested volunteer opportunities. For more information, contact Kimberly Whitley at 203-776-6208, ext. 33

Arts and Crafts - Work with children in the evenings on special arts and crafts projects that you design
Childcare - Two-hour slots open from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on weekdays, while moms are in workshops or inhouse appointments
Events  - Coordinate special events for holidays, house celebrations. Examples: cooking class graduations or summer cookouts
Exercise - Assist small groups with exercise equipment and videos
Meal Service - Prepare and serve meals for residents
Playground - Play with and supervise young children in outdoor play activities
Recreation -  Playing with children in recreational activities that you coordinate, afternoons, evenings and/or weekends. Outdoor activities preferred.
Sewing - Teach use of sewing machines for minor clothing repair and to create simple household items like pillows, curtains, quilts
Story Hour - Provide stories & read-aloud activities
Tutoring I - Work with pre-school and kindergarten children. We have computerized learning tools. Or conduct simple science projects like summer gardens.
Tutoring II - Tutor school-age children one-to-one and in small groups, use computerized learning tools, reinforce school work, enrichment activities, chaperone field trips with parents/residents
Tutoring III - One-to-one tutoring with teens, including computer instruction
Workshops - Facilitate formal workshops on specific life skills - setting up a bank account, dealing with utility companies, how to do laundry, etc.

Program Support Activities

Childcare -  Maintain child care space – straighten up, bleach toys, keep track of supplies
Computers -  Set up computer stations, monitor computers regularly to correct problems 
Librarian - Collect children’s video and audio tapes, preview and suggest use, maintain library

Shelter Support Activities

Building - Maintain the building, paint, rake leaves
Clerical - Assist with mailings, filing, reception & other clerical work
Data Entry - Enter donor and volunteer information into database
Donations - Sort donations and evaluate their utility
Newsletter - Work with staff on quarterly newsletter
Photography - Take photographs at special events
